ic! Berlin, screwless eyewear
ic! Berlin makes glasses for everybody – everybody, who doesn’t want to be like everybody else. They make glasses for your face. For round, oblong, oval, square, angular, soft, large and small faces. Glasses that are exciting, quiet, bombastic, silent, edgy, classic. Zen-like cohesion or rebellious screams, but above all, functional; weightless and gentle on the skin. Marching to the beat of our own drum. Bucking the norm. Breaking the mould. No bandwagons. We are not fashion lemmings.
H. Where does your story start from? Who is behind this interesting project?
ic! berlin was founded in 1996 in Berlin as part of a university project to design a screwless hinge. Our idea: to put that hinge on a pair of glasses. Of the three founding fathers, Ralph Anderl remains today as sole owner, CEO and worldwide sheetmetalglasses salesman.
H. How would you define your style?
H. Who or what inspires your collections?
Berlin! From the chic avenues of Charlottenburg to the punks in Friedrichshain to the epicentre of Berlin cool, Mitte (where, incidentally, we made our first collections in our living room at the time). We made our first frame in Berlin and we continue to design and produce every frame in our own Produktion Haus in Berlin. It’s our home, it’s our castle, it’s our source of constant inspiration.
H. How important is too choose the right pair of glasses and what are the tricks?
Glasses are the first thing someone sees when they meet you, so getting it right couldn’t be more important. Your glasses can say everything without you even opening your mouth. There are no “tricks”, but perhaps the most important rule people should keep in mind is proportion. Most people can wear any shape – round, square, panto, giant aviator, whatever – it’s all about getting the proportions right. You should wear the frame; the frame shouldn’t wear you. The best advice is to keep an open mind, experiment with shapes and colours, and listen to your optician – they do this all day, every day and they know what they are talking about :)
H. Materials, quality and design. What else makes a perfect pair of glasses?
Craftsmanship & character. Even rimless glasses have character and reveal a lot about the person wearing them.
H. who would you like see wearing your glasses?
Everyone! More specifically, Karl Lagerfeld.
